KAMPALA SHORT FILM FESTIVAL'S BEST AND WORST

Short Films in Uganda are making a mark and placing this very resilient industry on its way to the government's budget line. The ten works that veteran Arts Journalist Moses Serugo curated are a brilliant set of interesting stories, captured each with different technique.

While cinematography varied depending on the producers and their own style of work, one thing remained standard, that there is room for growth in an industry still struggling for recognition. The first Kampala Short Film Festival (KSFF) has left local film makers thrust against the wall,to produce even better content ahead of the second KSSFF in 2017.

Nes-G (right)is among the most popular short film makers, whose works Silent Depression in the video has travelled as far as India, Kenya and USA at several film festivals, and been reviewed on continental, international and regional media.

But while you haze your TV set at home with works from Hollywood/Nollywood, have you tried the delicacies local products are yet to give. the 10 short films are a directive into the future of film in Uganda.

And a direct retreat from my earlier views after the second Uganda Film Festival (UFF 2015), that that year had been rather slow for film production. While feature films submitted for the festival/awards were not entirely works of 2015, but inclusive of as old as 2013; short film makers (directors and producers) were busy baking beautiful works that beyond doubt are worth watching.

Miira Naire is among the few mentors who are inspiring local film makers. She directed the soon to be released Disney Feature film, Queen of Katwe, that stars Kenyan Hollywood sensation Lupita Nyong'o. She is also created platforms like Maisha lab which offers funding for film projects such as short films.

In my opinion as a part of the audience, this is the line up of the films in order of enjoyment.
Jinxed
Silent Depression
Trash Cash
In Reality
A Dog Story
Mirror
Pregnant Woman Stabs Husband to Death
The Test
Drawn Together
Wande
